Lord Byron was a famous Romantic Poet. “She walks in beauty is a short lyrical poem where the poet is praising the gracefulness of the Lady. It not only talks about the outer appearance but inner beauty as well.

Theme/central idea/form of the poem:

The central idea revolves around the beauty of the woman. - her eyes, her black(raven) tresses, her soft cheek, her calm brow and the color of her skin. Lord Byron has compared her to the night sky describing her serene and perfect beauty. Throughout this poem the poet never declares his love for that woman. There is a perfect blend between the mind and the body.

Poetic Style, Language:

This 18-line Lyrical poem consist of three stanzas, that is sestet, written in Iambic Meter. The poem follows a regular Rhyme scheme of “abab” throughout the poem.

Varieties of Poetic Devices are used by the poet like Alliteration, simile, Anti-thesis, Exclamation, Inversion, Metaphor, Repetition, Personification. The poet has employed literary device like imagery to enhance the beauty of the poem.

Special features:

The poet does not disclose his love throughout the poem which adds mystery. The admiration and obsession of the poet about the woman is clearly felt in this poem. Soul is more beautiful than the body is the underlined message conveyed in the poem.

Message/Values Conveyed

The message is about the importance of inner beauty, the mind which is a divine thing that affect the outer appearance of the woman. If you feel beautiful, you are beautiful.

Your opinion about the Poem:  I feel this poem makes us realise that one should not judge a person on the basis of one’s physical appearance as it may fade away with the passage of time. One must appreciate beauty from inner side like mind and Nature.
