 UNIT 2.8 SMALL TOWNS AND RIVERS

About the Poem/poet/Title:  The Poem, ‘Small Towns and Rivers” written by Mamang Dai. The title of the poem describes a terrain in Nature, where River is of Prime importance. The poetess conveys the vibrant and eternal phenomenon of Nature. The poetess shows a contrast between Nature, where the souls of dead dwell, and the towns are built at the cost of Nature.

Theme/central idea of the Poem: The poetess begins the poem with small towns situated amidst trees, which reminds her of death. She treats life and death as transient, but the Nature and rituals are Permanent. This Irony is used by the poetess effectively. The River has a predominant presence in her poem.

 Language/Style: The poem consists of seven Stanzas of unequal length. The poem is written in Free verse. The poem does not have a Rhyme Scheme. The poetess has used her agony in an effective manner.

The lines are short and verses are lucid. The expressions like ,' The River has a soul,' ' it holds its breath' and 'the River knows' enriches the beauty of this poem.

Special Features The traditional belief that the souls of the dead dwell in Nature and rise with the sun, the cool bamboo that springs back with the sunlight, and the significance of the same in the life are the most beautiful thoughts expressed by the poet.

Message/ Moral/Significance: The main message of the poem is the mixed feelings of the poet about Nature and the small towns which lie by the River. The poet expresses her agony about the destruction of the Nature which is going on at the cost of "Progress"

Your opinion about the Poem : I like the simplicity of the poem. we all feel the sorrow of the poet as we read about how nature's beauty is destroyed for man's greed called,' Development" or "Progress"

 UNIT 2.7 SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY



About the Poem, Poet and Title: “She walks in beauty” is written by Lord Byron. The Title itself is self-explanatory as it talks about the beauty of a Woman. Lord Byron was a famous Romantic Poet. “She walks in beauty is a short lyrical poem where the poet is praising the gracefulness of the Lady. It not only talks about the outer appearance but inner beauty as well.


Theme/central idea/form of the poem:  

The central idea revolves around the beauty of the woman. - her eyes, her black(raven) tresses, her soft cheek, her calm brow and the color of her skin. Lord Byron has compared her to the night sky describing her serene and perfect beauty. Throughout this poem the poet never declares his love for that woman. There is a perfect blend between the mind and the body.


Poetic Style, Language:  

This 18-line Lyrical poem consist of three stanzas, that is sestet, written in Iambic Meter. The poem follows a regular Rhyme scheme of “abab” throughout the poem.


Poetic Devices

Varieties of Poetic Devices are used by the poet like Alliteration, simile, Anti-thesis, Exclamation, Inversion, Metaphor, Repetition, Personification. The poet has employed literary device like imagery to enhance the beauty of the poem.


Special features:  

The poet does not disclose his love throughout the poem which adds mystery. The admiration and obsession of the poet about the woman is clearly felt in this poem. Soul is more beautiful than the body is the underlined message conveyed in the poem.


Message/Values Conveyed

The message is about the importance of inner beauty, the mind which is a divine thing that affect the outer appearance of the woman. If you feel beautiful, you are beautiful.


Your opinion about the Poem:  I feel this poem makes us realise that one should not judge a person on the basis of one’s physical appearance as it may fade away with the passage of time. One must appreciate beauty from inner side like mind and Nature.
